Let Gaza live!

The murderous embargo must be lifted
Bild
In the Gaza Strip one and a half million people virtually live under siege, behind barbed wire and without a chance to escape this prison camp. The living conditions are unbearable due to a severe shortage of food, medicine and clean water, strictly limited power supply and worsening hygienic conditions. Despite this situation the blockade of the Gaza Strip is tightened and the Israeli Army is launching military actions and bombardments on an almost daily basis. Those who have to suffer are the civilians.

Gaza: the wretched of the earth resisting

Hamas’s steadfastness might prompt Israel to further escalate the attack
by Wilhelm Langthaler
Israel’s ground assault on Gaza is meeting severe resistance – as has been the case many times before. Despite massive destruction and a death toll exceeding one thousand – mainly civilians – the resistance and Hamas remain combative. They rejected a capitulation agreement put forward by Egypt and endorsed by Israel. Lifting the embargo remains the central and immediate Palestinian demand as the base for a ceasefire. This is legitimate and must be supported by democrats across the globe.

1) Israel needs to present a success

The current attack on Gaza has been growing into an outright showdown to tilt an equilibrium that is no more acceptable to either side. In this extremely asymmetric war one can assume that if the Zionist Goliath does not succeed in substantially weakening Hamas, the battle might turn into an affirmation of the Palestinian David.

Gaza truce indicates tectonic drift

Partial lifting of blockade impact of the Arab revolt
Anti-Imperialist Camp
Despite the fact that both sides hail their victory, the important change of relationship of forces in favor of the Arab masses can easily be recognized. The Palestinian resistance eventually achieved the far-reaching easing of the blockade (1) – though the exact extend remains to be seen and even fought over. The US had to give something to Egypt which Cairo could pass on to the Palestinians and Hamas. It is a sign of a tectonic drift powered by the Arab popular movement which sooner or later will change the grand design of the entire region.

1) As always the US firmly stood on the Israeli side. They, however, pressurized their main partner to accept the truce. Furthermore they made clear that they are strongly opposed to a ground offensive which would further inflame the region. But Hamas refused to accept the usual Israeli conditions. So the cease fire became possible only with significant concessions namely the partial lifting of the blockade.

David resisted Goliath

Tear down the ghetto walls! Send human solidarity to Gaza!

For three long weeks Israel bombarded the Gaza strip leaving behind blood, destruction and misery. The imbalance could not have been greater: On one side the most powerful army of the region backed by the military supremacy of the US. On the other side a starving and impoverished people closed up behind ghetto walls and forced to defend itself by completely inadequate means.
