Free Jose Maria Sison!
30/8/2007
by Intl Committee DEFENDThe International Committee Defend condemns in the strongest terms the unjust arrest this morning, August 28, of Filipino political exile Prof. Jose Maria Sison, by the Dutch Police, on trumped-up charges, and the simultaneous police raids in Utrecht on several houses of Filipinos, including the NDF International Information Office. The arrest of Professor Sison came after the Philippine Supreme Court dismissed several politically-motivated cases filed against him and several others. The case filed against him by the Dutch police are similarly politically-motivated and must be dismissed immediately. Also, the European Court of the First Instance in Luxemburg on July 11, annulled the inclusion of Professor Sison in the European Council's 'terrorist' listing because … [read more]

Bizarre Ending to Trial of Padilla
25/8/2007
Guilty for "conspiracy" thus overruling juryAugust 16, 2007: Miami, Florida: Hispanic convert to Islam, Jose Padilla, was found guilty on charges of "conspiracy" related to terrorism. His co-defendants Hassoun and al-Jayyousi were also convicted.Jose Padilla was held in isolation for three and a half years before he got the right to a proper trial. He underwent sophisticated forms of torture devised by the Bush administration. Specialists in the field say that torture which creates disorientation, hopelessness and dependence left Padilla broken and psychologically willing to please his oppressors. No evidence or witnesses could be found against him. The government case depended on an application form which Padilla supposedly filled to be able to attend an al-Qaida camp. However there are … [read more]
Reply to Bennis: The Iraqi Resistance is just and should be supported
24/8/2007
by Kosta Harlan, USAIn the four years of the U.S. occupation of Iraq, public debate within the U.S. antiwar movement on whether to support the Iraqi resistance has rarely taken place. Consequently the recent polemic between Alexander Cockburn and Phyllis Bennis (a leader in the United for Peace and Justice Coalition) is an extremely positive development and should be welcomed. It is an important debate that needs to take place at all levels within the U.S. antiwar movement. Some weeks ago Alexander Cockburn wrote of the need for the U.S. antiwar movement to openly support the resistance ("Support their troops?", CounterPunch). In her reply, "Why the Anti-War Movement Doesn't Embrace the Iraqi Resistance", Bennis correctly argues that the basis of unity in the movement should not be … [read more]

[read more]
Break the isolation of Hamas
6/8/2007
Continue the solidarity with the Palestinian resistance against occupationWith notable exceptions, much of the pro-Palestinian solidarity movement seems dumb-stricken by the developments on the ground in Gaza and the West Bank. This silence on the recent situation threatens to shatter what has been built up of solidarity work with the Palestinian resistance against the occupation.A majority has chosen either to abstain completely from taking a stand on which forces represents the Palestinian liberation struggle, or, even worse, chosen to align themselves with the Fatah leadership. Behind Abbas and Mohammed Dahlan, Abbas' security chief who was routed from Gaza are Israeli and American interests who seek to destroy the resistance and create a permanent state of civil war between … [read more]
