Chances and dangers for a social revolutionary left
15/06/2013
by Wilhelm Langthaler
The old left had failed facing the AKP challenge – because they read them erroneously as a linear prolongation of the military dictatorship. As the authoritarian and culturally repressive tendencies of Erdogan are coming to the fore, a new chance is being offered to social revolutionary democrats. But there is one condition: not to tap into the trap set by Kemalism which already had seemed moribund.
The German city of Stuttgart could seem a peculiar choice to hold a conference on Palestine and the One-State solution. However the defense of the Palestinian cause by an acclaimed local politician, Evelyn Hecht-Galinski, whose father was president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, seems to give the movement a significant resonance. Over 20 speakers from around the world drew in several hundred participants from across Germany and neighbouring countries. What follows is an account of some of the speakers' interventions.
As in Tunisia and Egypt also in Syria there is a significant revolutionary democratic camp. While they all share the opposition against foreign intervention, sectarianism and excessive militarism their positions range from pacifism to the support of the armed struggle. Following appeal has been launched by the latter tendency spearheaded by Syrian figures like Salameh Kaileh or Samir Aita and endorsed by personalities like Fawaz Traboulsi, Etiénne Balibar, Elias Khoury, Ilan Pappe, Tariq Ali…

Anti-Imperialist Camp
In Assisi, the picturesque medieval town symbolising the quest for peace and friendship between Islam and Christianity, the Tahrir movements against the US order in the Arab world came together with the popular protests in Southern Europe against the starvation programmes of the EU oligarchy. It was a unique event bringing the tremendous challenges to the revolutionary movement to the consciousness of the militants.
Tahrir popular uprisings at our doors
In the first years after the formation of the Anti-imperialist Camp we used to hold an annual public summer camp in Assisi, Italy, the last one in 2004. After difficult years we revive this experience this year 2012 on the juncture of the Arab revolt and the Southern European movements against the EU crisis.
Campaign
End Israeli apartheid
Palestine is the symbolic centre of all conflicts within the imperialist-capitalist world system. It exemplifies that (neo)colonial domination, let alone the grab of land by the West, evokes resistance. The two-state formula “land for peace” (read: partial return of land for the end of resistance) has failed as Israel sticks to its goal to take it all.
Campaign
India wages war on its people
In Hindi Adivasi means first people and is used also as a self-description. Since the Indo-european settlement the mostly Dravidic Adivasis have been oppressed. They either remain below the Hindu caste system or got integrated at its lowest rank – like untouchables or Dalits. The Indian constitution deliberately avoided the notion Adivasi to ward off possible political claims emanating from the meaning.
Campaign
The murderous embargo must be lifted
In the Gaza Strip one and a half million people virtually live under siege, behind barbed wire and without a chance to escape this prison camp. The living conditions are unbearable due to a severe shortage of food, medicine and clean water, strictly limited power supply and worsening hygienic conditions. Despite this situation the blockade of the Gaza Strip is tightened and the Israeli Army is launching military actions and bombardments on an almost daily basis. Those who have to suffer are the civilians.
Campaign
No to imperialist aggression, for a multi-polar world
Iran is the main statal challenger of the US uni-polar world order. The nuclear conflict in substance is all about whether Tehran accepts or not to bow to imperialist supremacy. If Iran is able to hold out is will be a bold step towards a multi-polar world. For anti-imperialist forces across the world this will give new space to breath.
